Presentation Abstract
1. Near peer teaching (NPT) in design studio courses (By Mr. Mathew Pryor)
In his brief presentation, Mathew will look at the increasing use of upper year students as student teaching assistants (STA) (near-peer teachers) in design studio courses. With reference to his own 3rd year undergraduate landscape systems studio, he will discuss the role of STAs in supporting instructors and students, and reflect on the highly positive impact they have had on student learning, and the benefits to the STAs themselves.
2. Students as Co-instructors – nourish program for fledging medical educators (By Dr. Mandy Liu and Ms. Elizabeth Fang)
Medical students will become medical educators during the course of their careers. In School of Biomedical Sciences, we established a near-peer anatomy teacher (N-PAT) programme for future medical educators to get their first taste as co-instructors in dissection sessions. Since 2021, N-PATs have been involved in nearly 100 dissection sessions. Hundreds of medical students have benefited from this programme. Many have joined the N-PAT team in later years and feed back into the program. In this presentation, we will share our experiences in the N-PAT programme from multiple perspectives.
3. Developing a Collaborative Network of University Mental Wellness Through a Student-Staff Partnership (By Dr. Gloria Wong and Mr. Toto Cheung)
Mental health impacts on all aspects of university life. From teaching and learning to peer relationship, formal services and co-curricular activities, students are key stakeholders in the co-production of a campus environment where people flourish or languish. In this talk, we share our recent experience with Wellness@HKU, which started as a small partnership among a group of students and staff enthusiastic in mental health, with an aim to engage a wider community within HKU through both traditional and student-friendly communications for a developing a collaborative network of university mental wellness.
About the Speakers (in presenting order):
Mr. Mathew Pryor is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in the Division of Landscape Architecture, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He combines more than 20 years’ experience as a practicing landscape architect with teaching and research at HKU. Through his courses in design and sustainable development he has developed a number of pedagogical innovations in socialized learning. He was a recipient of the HKU Distinguished Teaching Award (2021) and the UGC Teaching (Team) Award (2019). His experimental virtual learning project ‘Curios’ has won a QS Re-imagine Education Award (2021) and the HKU Teaching Innovation (Team) Award (2020).
Dr. Mandy Liu is a Lecturer at LKS Faculty of Medicine at HKU. She is involved in anatomy and histology education across all healthcare related undergraduate program in HKUMed. She is the coordinator of near-peer anatomy teacher programme and Enrichment Year Programme (Functional anatomy and anatomy education).
Ms. Elizabeth Fang, student, MBBS Class of 2026, LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU
Dr. Gloria Wong is Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Director of the MSocSc(Mental Health) Programme, and Co-Chair of the U21 University Mental Health Group. She was once a HKU undergraduate and postgraduate student. Gloria aims to connect people, activities, and resources to enhance mental wellbeing in healthy and clinical populations.
Mr. Toto Cheung is a final year BSocSc (Psychology & Counselling) student. He is committed to advancing youth mental health by spearheading youth-led projects that empower students to realise their potential and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
